German social democratic politican Frank-Walter Steinmeier is the next Barack Obama. Or at least tries to be. In preparation of the 17th election of the german Bundestag the SPD discovered web 2.0 for its strategies.
After a relaunch of SPD’s website in January Steinmeier is now using the “wisdom of the crowds” to design his own brand. For this they tasked Berlin startup Jovoto to start a creative contest until march.
For me personally concepts like Jovoto are questionable. They force a lot of designers to send in their designs but how good are these designers that offer their work for free with a limited chance to get the reward for the project.
Like the experiment of Sir Francis Galton in autumn 1906 showed is the crowd able to guess nearly the correct weight of a bull by its average of all. This one is very easy and something different from creating something new. But for me the question arises how good the designers can be. I would say you can’t get the best designers for a contest like Jovoto sets up, because they won’t work for no money. So all that’s left is a mass of moderate designers who actually are average. So, is it possible to get the best result for your company or is all you get various suggestions of the average?
But on the other hand doing a contest with Jovoto is maybe the cheapest way to get design concepts at all.
